Alexis LaMontagna

Alexis LaMontagna is a Los Angeles native fashion designer. In this interview Alexis LaMontagna describes her fashion line as really sexy but comfortable to fit real women with real curves, her muse for her Fall 2008 collection: Dita Von Teese, what she loves most about being a fashion designer, and plans for the Alexis LaMontagna Menswear and Children line.

When did your fascination with fashion design begin?

My fascination with fashion probably started when I was about 3 or 4 years old. I remember always being late for preschool because I would be arguing with my mom about what I wanted to wear to school. She would buy me all of these really expensive, girly outfits and all I wanted to wear was some really tomboyish outfit out of my brothers’ closet that didn’t match and a pair of pink cowboy boots.

How would you describe the Alexis LaMontagna fashion line?

I would describe the line as a whole as really sexy but also comfortable. I really try to make clothes that fit real women with real woman curves, because that’s what I think is beautiful and sexy. Although, sometimes the word sexy is associated with tight and short and although there is some of that, there is also the throw on a pair of comfy jeans that look like they came out of your boyfriends closet and a wife beater look that I also find to be equally as hot.

How do you go about deciding what garment to design?

There is no real formula to how I decide what garment to design. My style is constantly changing and there is always at least a few pieces that are in my head that I wish were in my closet so I just start with those and then I usually build in outfits or what I think that piece would be cute worn with. I guess I just design what I want to wear at that moment.

“The gown, the model, the music, I felt that it just all really worked together. Seeing that model walk down the runway in that dress still gives me chills.”

Where do you draw the inspiration for the style and color of your designs?
I draw inspiration from everywhere! Sometimes I will be driving and listening to music and all of a sudden a certain song will make me feel crazy inspired or talking to my husband about all of the places that we want to travel to always gets me really inspired for some reason too. The worst is when I get in bed and I’m about to fall asleep and then all of a sudden out of nowhere I feel really inspired and my brain just starts going crazy thinking about all of the pieces I want to design. I’ll lay there for hours picturing all of these crazy cool clothes walking down the runway and the next thing I know I have to get out of bed and I’ve slept a total of two hours!

Who do you see wearing Alexis LaMontagna fashions?

There are quite a few people that I would love to see wearing my clothes. I designed my Fall ’08 collection with Dita Von Teese as my muse so obviously I would LOVE for her to wear my clothes. I also really love Kate Hudson, Drew Barrymore, and Eva Mendes and would love to see them in my clothes. They are all really beautiful, sexy, confident women with great style.

What would be one of your most memorable garments you’ve ever designed?

One of my most memorable garments that I have designed would be a black and red striped denim gown that was the finale piece for my Fall ’08 runway show. The gown, the model, the music, I felt that it just all really worked together. Seeing that model walk down the runway in that dress still gives me chills.

Can you tell us more about the Alexis LaMontagna collection for this season and for the upcoming season?

Well, my inspiration for this season was 1920’s Hollywood Goth Glamour. I love old Hollywood Glamour but really dark so that’s what I created for Fall. Spring is totally different, it’s still a little bit dark because that’s what I like but its got more of a hippie feel to it. I love the music of the late 60’s and 70’s and the whole idea of Woodstock and what it was all about and seeing pictures and imagining what it would have been like to be a part of that really fascinates me so I tried to really use that as my inspiration for Spring. Also, obviously Spring is a bit more relaxed than Fall so you’ll still see some of the really classically tailored and structured pieces that I loved in the Fall collection but mixed in with some more comfy breezy dresses and wide legged slacks, tanks, ponchos, etc.

Who are some of your favorite designers of all time?

Some of my favorite designers of all time are Vivienne Westwood, Karl Lagerfeld, Coco Chanel, John Galliano, and the list goes on and on!

Where can we shop for Alexis LaMontagna fashions?
A couple of the stores that you can find the line in are Maxine on Ventura Blvd in Studio City and Diavolina on Robertson Blvd in West Hollywood but for a full list of stores you can go to www.alexislamontagna.com.

What do you love most about being a fashion designer?

What I love most about being a fashion designer is when I get to see a woman put on one of my pieces and feel really good in it. To know that something that I created from one of my ideas can make somebody feel sexy or beautiful is just so cool.

How would you describe your own style?

I would describe my own style as rocker hippie. Vintage bell bottom Levi’s and a vintage t-shirt with black hair and black nail polish I think would be the best way to describe me.

What’s next for Alexis LaMontagna?

Next for Alexis LaMontagna is to try to grow the line so we can start on Menswear and a childrens line, which I’m really looking forward to!

It was a pleasure to interview Alexis you can check out more of her amazing designs at her website: www.alexislamontagna.com

At an early age of five.. I remember peeking through my mothers closet and picking out the things that she should wear 🙂

Exciting, terrifying, frustrating at times, exhausting, inspiring, alienation from the outside
world and truly bizarre.

I was asked to design looks for Heidi Klum right after the show wrapped, which I was more than happy to. I dressed her to the US Weekly Hot Hollywood part where she was honored for style icon of the year

“Heidi Klum, she is great, open to my ideas and ready to try new things, we make a good match because I know what she likes and she goes for what I design very well.”

How would you define your designing style?
Elegant, feminine and sophisticated. It is really about celebrating women.

Where do you draw the inspiration for the style and color of your designs?
My muses are all the women I design for with a theme usually outlines, last season was derived from Joan of Arc.. this theme is still in the works for Spring Summer 09.. Colors are usually inspired from paintings I may look at, they also represent a deeper meaning at times, depending on the mood of the collection at hand.. it is an ever changing process.

How did you come up with your signature ‘draping’ look?
I am self taught, therefore since I didn’t know the trained rules obtained in school, I discovered unusual ways to drape materials that outline the figure in flattering ways, the more I did it the more I fell in love with the technique..

Who do you see wearing Rami Kashou fashions?
Any woman who takes pride in being feminine, desires to exude sex appeal and sophistication at the same time..? A modern woman who like classic elements with an unusual twist.

Can you tell us about the Rami Kashou collection for this season?
I like clean lines, flattering fits and fresh colors that make you think of a new time.

Which celebrities have you designed for and how was it like collaborating with them?
Heidi Klum, she is great, open to my ideas and ready to try new things, we make a good match because I know what she likes and she goes for what I design very well. Becki Newton, is a pure sweetheart and is ready to wear anything that is different

Jessica Alba is a pure classic feminine beauty, she has been a great supporter since the beginning of my career. Dita Von Teese, will wear the most daring looks that I design and pull them off beautifully. She is exquisite.

Visit my website www.ramikashou.com and you will find all the stores that carry my line in and out of the US.

What does it take to succeed as a fashion designer?
Dedication, love of the business, originality, understanding, hard work, being in the right place at the right time.

How would you describe your own style?
Mine would be dressy casual.. I like a good pair of jeans with nice dress boots and my own dress shirts that I design on my free time.

What’s next for Rami Kashou?
A new collection, more evening dresses a boutique where people can visit with me and have custom made designs created for them… and a few more things that I will share when we’re closer
to the date!

Rachel Pally

Rachel Pally is the talented fashion designer behind the Rachel Pally fashion line. In this interview, Rachel talks about how she fell in love with fashion design while working at a custom shop in college, the Rachel Pally design philosophy, and what made her fashion line take-off as a must have brand among celebrities.

When did your fascination with fashion design begin?
I was working in the costume shop for my dance department in college and just fell in love with it. I loved making costumes and seeing them worn, and I started to make things for myself. Pretty soon my girlfriends were borrowing my pieces and I thought, “Hey! I should give this a try!”

Can you tell us how it all began: the Rachel Pally fashion line?
After I started sewing my own clothes, I sold them on consignment at a store/gallery in Chinatown in LA and things kept selling out. So I made a set of samples and shopped them around to stores.

How would you describe the Rachel Pally design philosophy?
Easy, sexy, day-to-night, night-to-day, body conscious

“I started before there were any other brands using jersey for anything other than t-shirts, so I was offering a product that couldn’t be found elsewhere. And the collection has such a large range, women of all ages and sizes can find something that perfectly suits them.”

Where do you draw the inspiration for the styles and colors of your designs?
From women I know, women I see on the street, magazines, movies, travel – I am always inspired by things I see.

What would be some of your most popular garments you’ve ever designed?
The cropped gaucho pant, the sailor pant, the full tie tube dress, the Mexico dress, the caftan dress…..

To what do you attribute your success in the jersey arena?
I started before there were any other brands using jersey for anything other than t-shirts, so I was offering a product that couldn’t be found elsewhere. And the collection has such a large range, women of all ages and sizes can find something that perfectly suits them. And our fit is fantastic so people keep coming back for more! And I received a lot of celebrity press early on, which built the brand name, got me into magazines, and really launched the company.

What made Rachel Pally designs take off as a must-have brand, especially among celebrities?
The fit, the availability, the ease of wear…..and lots and lots of PR and gifting!

How does your experience in dance influence the Rachel Pally fashion line today?
Jersey has such beautiful drape and motion – having a body in there makes the clothes come to life. My dance background also makes me aware of women’s bodies – what does and doesn’t look good, where things should cling and where they should drape.

What should we expect to see at Rachel Pally in the upcoming season?
We just shipped our swim collection and we have cashmere and double-knit ponti coming out for fall. Just keeping it new and fresh every season!

Who are some of your favorite designers of all time?
Marni, Balenciaga, Donna Karan, Lanvin

How would you describe your own style?
Eclectic.

What’s next for Rachel Pally?
A vacation! And then….who knows!

Many thanks to Rachel for taking the time to interview for Style Interviews you can learn more about her designs and fashions at: www.rachelpally.com

Joseph Domingo

Joseph Domingo is a San Francisco based Fashion Designer, specializing in custom-made clothing. He designs for men and women, including sportswear, contemporary clothing, evening wear, and wedding gowns. In this interview Joseph Domingo talks about what inspired him to become a Fashion Designer, the most memorable garment he designed so far, his passion for meeting great people and making them look beautiful, and his dreams for a Joseph Domingo empire.

When did your fascination with fashion design begin?
As a young boy I used to love watching beauty pageants like Miss Universe. I got inspired by the beautiful women and their cloths.

How would you describe the Joseph Domingo fashion line?
Modern, contemporary, yet classy. The Joseph Domingo line is classic, and doesn’t follow trends.

“Shakira wore my dress on the cover of Cosmopolitan February 2008 edition, which was published in Europe, Check Republic, Asia, turkey and Latin America.”

How do you go about deciding what garment to design?
Depends on the fabric and client. I designed clothes that are appropriate to the event my client is attending. It has to be the right style that fits the occasion and climate too.

Where do you draw the inspiration for the style and color of your designs?
Travel, museums, architecture…

Who do you see wearing Joseph Domingo fashions?
Confident and sexy individuals. It has to be sexy and not vulgar.

What would be one of your most memorable garments you’ve ever designed?
Shakira wore my dress on the cover of Cosmopolitan February 2008 edition, which was published in Europe, Check Republic, Asia, turkey and Latin America.

Can you tell us more about the Joseph Domingo collection for this season?
Vixen inspired, cat woman, Alexis Colby from Dynasty. Sexy lines but not vulgar. The clothes are a bit longer and form fitted.

Who are some of your favorite designers of all time?
I call them the ‘Three Italians’: Giorgio Armani, Gianfranco Ferre, and Valentino. I love Giorgio Armani’s clothes because they are classic and well constructed. Gianfranco Ferre’s beautiful clothes are inspired by his studies in Architecture, and Valentino for his fluid and feminine clothes.

At my studio in San Francisco.

What do you love most about being a fashion designer?

Arona Martin

Meet Arona Martin an Event Director at D3 Events who has worked with a ton of different clients and a variety of events, such as: HBO, Playboy, KODAK, Michael Jordon, the Clintons, etc. In this interview Arona Martin gives us her definition for “Party With Style”, tips on how to plan the ultimate 4th of July party, and her dream for a male-oriented baby shower honoring Matthew McConaughey’s baby.

How did you end up in a career as an event planner?
I think it started when I was a little girl and would invite everybody on my street over for a weekly tea party. I would hand write the invitations and require a strict dress code…everyone had to wear my grandmother’s costume jewelry and a boa (yes, even the boys). On one occasion, I even did a Magilla Gorilla theme and served bananas. As a teen, I’d host regular themed dinners (i.e. if we ordered Chinese food, I’d wear a kimono and chop sticks holding my hair up…)

What is your role at D3 Events and who are some of its clients?
I am the Event Director, and have worked with a ton of different clients on a variety of events. HBO, Playboy, KODAK, Michael Jordon, the Clintons, etc.

What is your definition of the phrase: “Party With Style”?
Making even the most lavish gala seem effortless…that, and still looking good after nine hours in stiletto heels!

What is the difference between planning an event for a celebrity, a corporation, or a politician?
My goal for every party is to make the client or company feel like they have celebrity status. I like to think I am changing people’s lives one party at a time. Who doesn’t want to feel like a rock star for a night?

What are some of the most memorable events you have organized so far?
I think it has to be my partner, Joey Vartanian’s surprise birthday party. It was a “Royal” theme, and aside from having horse and carriages on hand to take guests home, we had a 30 person Gospel choir sing “Hail to the KING” at midnight while knights brought in a 4 foot cake in the shape of a crown. Getting recognition for a job well done is great, but seeing him have great time was incredibly rewarding.

“My dream party to plan would be a male-oriented baby shower honoring Matthew McConaughey’s baby. From a cigar rolling station, to "how to properly wear the baby bjorn and still play Wii", to "hold the remote and the baby bottle at the same time," there is so much I could do!”

What would be your dream party to plan?
A male-oriented baby shower honoring Matthew McConaughey’s baby. From a cigar rolling station, to “how to properly wear the baby bjorn and still play Wii”, to “hold the remote and the baby bottle at the same time,” there is so much I could do!

How do you stay calm when things don’t go as they are planned?
I over plan for most of my events, so the night of I can concentrate on the client(s). I also truly love every event I create, so I try to act as a guest as well as the planner. There are issues that do come up occasionally, but that is why I have surrounded myself with an incredible staff that can handle everything. A few years back, I was preparing for a corporate party for 800, and 30 minutes before the doors opened there was a car crash right outside the venue that took out the electricity on the whole block. 5 minutes before the doors opened, we had 500 candles lighting the space….we quickly transformed the venue into an intimate cocktail party as guests arrived…an hour into the party the electricity came back and the transition was amazing, the client thought we planned it that way!

Is it difficult for you to enjoy an event someone else planned?
Not at all, I have a great time wherever I go – but sometimes it’s difficult to impress me.

What does it take to succeed as an event planner?
Most people would say organization- which is something that definitely helps- but I think the two key characteristics are: creativity and the ability to take risks.

What tips can you give us for planning the ultimate 4th of July party, or any theme party at home?
Here are some great twists to spice up this year’s 4th of July backyard BBQ party:

Acai Organic Cocktail!: Açai (ah-sci-ee) is a rainforest berry – a small, dark purple fruit that grows on palm trees on the floodplains of the Amazon basin. Recent scientific study has earned it the enviable title of “world’s healthiest fruit” in part, because it is likely to be the world’s highest antioxidant fruit. Use this organic juice to create a tasty cocktail and also be good to your body! Acai is replacing the pomegranate as the trendy cocktail mixer!
1 oz Bacardi Razz
1/2 oz Bacardi Grand Melon
1 oz acai juice
splash of lime juice
1 oz club soda
Shake and serve over ice with a wedge of lime!

SnoCone Machine (The adult version!)
Great for an outdoor party or any event where the weather is warm! The machine runs around $25 at any Target or Wal-Mart and the syrups come in all sorts of colors; why not do red white and blue sno cones?! Kids will love them, and you can add flavored vodka for the adults! Be a kid again with a kick!

The Updated Burger Bar:
In addition to putting out all sorts of fun toppings from shredded cheese, grilled onions, to potato chips, have 10 different sauces to choose from. What about ALSO all different burgers themselves? Like Kobe beef, Salmon burger, crab cake burger, turkey, etc. That could be cute? People will love to create all sorts of combinations, and with the guests helping themselves, it gives you time to enjoy the fireworks!

Style
Anyone and everyone has thrown a "white party"…why not incorporate our nations red white and blue theme into the night and have guests become a part of the decor by wearing all blue, you can then add the red and white into everything else (like decorations), and la-ta! Your patriotic party is a hit!

Swag Bags
Who doesn’t love a swag bag? Why not bring a little “Hollywood” to the outdoor BBQ and prepare gift bags for the guests. A “summer survival kit” is a fun touch (use the small grocery store recyclable ones they sell for $1) fill with suntan lotion in SPF 30 or more, mini bug spray, and a water bottle (again incorporating the eco-idea and cutting down on plastic waste). Guests will love it, and wont get bitten or burned!

What do you love most about your job?
Making every guest feel like they had the best night of their life!

How would you describe your own style?
I try to keep it casual with an edge, so it’s usually jeans with rocker heels ( I LOVE Beverly Feldman!) and some fun earrings. When I am working, it is all black. I don’t have a ton of time to go from drab to glam on an event night, so half of my closet is full of black “party” clothes. That, paired with over the top rhinestone earrings, and I’m ready for a red carpet entrance any night of the week.

Nick Verreos

Style Interviews is excited to introduce to you Nick Verreos, Project Runway’s Season 2 alum and designer of NIKOLAKI fashion line. In this interview Nick talks about life after Project Runway, his partnership with David Paul creating NIKOLAKI fashions, his designing style, and his plans for the future.

When did your fascination with fashion design begin?
When I was very young, my family and I traveled because my dad was a Diplomat so I became fascinated with the uniforms of the flight attendant (remember it was the 70’s and they were cuter then). Then, in my early teens, I found myself drawn to looking at magazines such as Vogue, as opposed to looking at the Sports section of the newspaper. I would then be inspired and draw collections in my notebooks that my mom had bought me.

How did your involvement with Bravo’s Project Runway Season Two come about?
I watched season one of the show and loved it, of course. Then I began receiving emails and messages from friends in the industry telling me that the Season Two casting was taking place and that I would be perfect for it. As an established Southern California designer who had shown at LA Fashion Week, been in magazines already and was also an Instructor of Fashion Design, I was a bit apprehensive about doing it. I felt both that I was “above that” and at the same time, afraid that I would be rejected from that first round of casting and not even make the cut. Thank God I wasn’t. Looking back, I can’t believe I ever had those reservations or feelings.

How would you describe your experience on Project Runway?
Two words: Fashion Olympics! It was an incredible experience throughout. Some weird “fashion” adrenaline kicked in, that I never knew I had, and I was able to sustain the surreal work and living environment that the show asks of its designers/contestants. I loved being at Parsons and the thought of creating work that would then be seen my millions of people, including my friends and family. Up to then, I was growing disillusioned with the fashion industry as a whole and how much I had struggled and nothing seemed to be happening. The show gave me that bit of added battery life that has changed my outlook on life and work.

What projects have you been working on since the show?
Apart from continuing to design my line, NIKOLAKI, last year, I became part of the “Glam Squad” of fashion and beauty experts for MSN’s “Style Studio” which I am extremely proud of. I also became the Official Spokesperson for the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising/FIDM, the school I teach at. Besides this, I have been making appearances as a fashion expert/commentator on red carpet post-awards shows on TV Guide Channel as well as E!. Did I mention I barely sleep anymore?

“Nikolaki is for a confident, sexy, ultra feminine woman. I would love to have women as diverse as Charlize Theron, Panelope Cruz, Queen Rania of Jordan, and Kylie Minogue wear NIKOLAKI. A boy can dream, right?”

NIKOLAKI is a partnership between you and David Paul. How did this business relationship evolve and how do you make it work?
I began NIKOLAKI (which means “Little Nick” in Greek) in 2001, soon after Henri Bendel ordered my first dress line. I asked my partner, David Paul, if he wanted to be my design and business partner, because I could not do this alone. It’s like “Donny and Marie”—He’s a “little bit Country” and I’m a “little bit Rock & Roll” and when we design it is the perfect “ying” and “yang” situation. He tames me and makes all my drawings/ideas more palatable for an elegant, sexy every-day woman, as opposed to the South American Diva Princess (my “imaginary muse”) whom I design for.

Who do you see wearing NIKOLAKI?
Nikolaki is for a confident, sexy, ultra feminine woman. I would love to have women as diverse as Charlize Theron, Panelope Cruz, Queen Rania of Jordan, and Kylie Minogue wear NIKOLAKI. A boy can dream, right?

Can you tell us about the NIKOLAKI collection for this season?
For Spring ’08, I continued to take advantage of the “Grecian Goddess” theme that was in the air. The theme of my collection was “Cleopatra in Rome 2008” and what she would bring with her to meet her Marc Anthony. We did a group of sinuous white silk jersey draped gowns and then added some dresses in bold graphic floral prints, as well as bright turquoise and fuchsia colors.

We did a group of sinuous white silk jersey draped gowns and then added some dresses in bold graphic floral prints, as well as bright turquoise and fuchsia colors.

Where can we shop for NIKOLAKI fashions?
Before Project Runway, our line was available in over 100 stores, from Henri Bendel to Nordstrom, to high-end boutiques such as Fred Segal, Diavolina and EMc2 in Manhattan. I have scaled down because of my busy schedule and last year, we began selling “By Special Order” through our website, www.nikolakidesign.com. This has actually worked out really well. In the future, we hope to have a “web store”, where women can purchase NIKOLAKI tops and dresses online. The gowns will still only be available by appointment only.

Which celebrities have you designed for and how was it like collaborating with them?
I was very thrilled when last month, Academy Award-winning actress (and “Dancing With The Stars” contestant) Marlee Matlin wore my gown to the Oscars. That was a coup for us. Her stylist contacted us and actually picked a gown from the collection and the next thing we knew, we were watching her, in the gown, being interviewed by Regis Philbin at the Live Pre-Oscars Show. Also, we designed a custom gown for “Desperate Housewives” actress Brenda Strong for the ’06 SAG Awards, which subsequently made the “Best Dresses of ‘06” lists of several publications. This collaboration began with her publicist contacting us. We then worked together on everything from the style to the color and fabrication. It all depends on the client. Other actresses who have worn NIKOLAKI in the past have included Patricia Arquette, Eva Longoria, Melora Hardin of NBC’s “The Office” and TV presenters Nancy O’Dell and Debbie Matenopoulos.

How would you define your designing style?
My designing style is mixing confidence, elegance and sexiness. She’s the European socialite’s daughter; she’s the Kuwaiti Princess, or the woman from Kansas who is going to a Charity Black Tie event. When I design I pretend every girl has their own “red carpet’ moment. Men want her and women are jealous at how amazing she looks. My design philosophy involves fusing my Mediterranean heritage with Roman sculpture-like draping, sensuous lines with hints of historical past fashion and a look into the future.

Where do you draw the inspiration for the style and color of your designs?
Art, architecture, visiting museums (the Metropolitan in NY and Queen Sofia in Madrid are my favorites). Also, I love looking at costume and history of fashion books as well as going to the FIDM Library and scouring 1930’s and 1940’s Vogue’s and Bazaar’s for inspiration.

What does it take to succeed as a fashion designer?
Several things are important, including a passionate love for fashion of course, savvy business sense, recognition of “branding yourself” and perhaps more importantly, an investor from Dubai wouldn’t hurt, to throw you lots and lots of money for those first ten years until you finally turn a profit!

How would you describe your own style?
Quirky Elegant Dandy. In the past, I was very much into more casual Abercrombie and American Eagle clothes (the Southern Californian in me) but not too long ago, I had an epiphany and realized that I wasn’t 22 any more. I now wear mainly dress shirts, ties, handkerchiefs, vests and blazers. It’s Eurotrash with a touch of Savile Row tailoring perhaps—but from H & M and Zara!!!

What’s next for Nick Verreos?
I will continue designing my line and look forward to my MSN Style Studio shoots which I really love doing and hopefully helping more women achieve their “inner Diva” with my style advice. I will continue teaching and doing more fashion expert TV appearances. I think the world is ready for a bearded Greek-Venezuelan version of Carson Kressley and Tim Gunn, don’t you? (don’t answer that!)

It was such a pleasure to interview Nick you can discover all about his NIKOLAKI line at www.nikolakidesign.com

Meghan Fabulous

Meet Meghan Fabulous the creator of Meghan Los Angeles fashion line, a favorite among celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Kimora Lee Simmons, Ashley Tisdale and more. Meghan created her line with her Los Angles roots and forward thinking women on her mind. In this interview Meghan tells us how her fascination with fashion design began, her favorite designers of all time, her design philosophy, and the launch of Meghan Loft at Harrods London this May.

When did your fascination with fashion design begin?
When I was 4, my mom would buy me loads of costume jewelry from the thrift store. and I would pile it on all at one time and walk up and down the streets of my neighborhood pushing a tiny pink shopping cart, I loved being glamorous at a young age.

How was the concept for Meghan Los Angles born?
I wanted to create a line from my Los Angeles roots, fashion for forward thinking women. The goal was to find the spaces where sexy and classy converge, and I think we have done that.

Where do you draw the inspiration for the styles and colors of your designs?
I draw a lot of inspiration for my designs from nature; natural colors are so intense and the textures are infinite. I love using animals, insects, and flowers in my prints – I design all my own prints.

“I am blessed to have had Angelina Jolie, Kimora Lee Simmons, Ashley Tisdale, Rebecca Romijn, and dozens of others who have worn my clothes. This really large and amazing celebrity fan base has developed around my line.”

What would be one of your most memorable garments you’ve ever designed?
I did a very tongue and cheek collection for Spring 2006, about celebrities and partiers at a fun and far out motel weekender. There were two special dresses – the nudie card dress and the beer cap dress – so much fun! I did have some help in drinking all 700 beers during my international travels, to make the whole dress.

What is your design philosophy?
Don’t take fashion too seriously!!! We aren’t finding the cure for cancer or saving children – It’s just clothes and an expression of your inner self.

How would you describe the Meghan Los Angeles Fall 2008 collection?
My theme is Dirty Diana; she is feminine with a hard edge. She is confident and courageous yet still embraces her refined and soft curves. Fall 2008 is all about contrasts – engaging the extremes in design, playing bright colors with dark ones and soft chiffon against structured lambskin. Dirty Diana is soft & hard, naughty & nice.

What should we expect to see at Meghan Los Angeles in the upcoming season?

Melissa Odabash

Meet Melissa Odabash, the talented designer behind the Melissa Odabash fashion line. Melissa is known for designing some of the most exquisite swimwear on the market. In this interview Melissa talks about how it all began, the latest from the Melissa Odabash collection, and even describes her own style.

When did your fascination with fashion design begin?
I began at seventeen moving from New Jersey to Europe and modeling swimwear in Italy for top designers. Doing so, I gained knowledge of fit, fashion and haute couture, and decided to try designing my own swimwear. Some designers didn’t get that a swimsuit should change the way you feel, from anxious to carefree. My designs are about flattering your figure and feeling great.

Where do you draw the inspiration for the style and color of your designs?
For my 2008 collection, I drew inspiration from African prints and Indonesian sunsets, a fusion of red, orange, raspberry and green sit alongside sexy metallic’s and signature animal prints

How would you describe the Melissa Odabash dress collection?
Classic with a vintage feel. They can be worn day into night. They are fun and flirty.

“Some designers didn’t get that a swimsuit should change the way you feel, from anxious to carefree. My designs are about flattering your figure and feeling great.”

Why do you insist on quality of materials when it comes to your designs?
I love high quality fabrics like Italian and French lace and lined silks and satins- they add another dimension to the dress.

Can you tell us more about the Melissa Odabash collection for this season?
This collection consists of the classic triangle shape, halters, and daring cut outs. I use stone, wood, and gold embellishments, while shell detail, and metallic rings remain from last season.

How does your experience as a fashion model influence Melissa Odabash today?
I was modeling tons of swimwear and everything was really cut badly and in horrible patterns. So I decided to launch a solid swimwear line with a flattering fit.

Where can we shop for the Melissa Odabash fashions?
Scoop NYC, Intermix, at the new Melissa Odabash boutique in London

Which celebrities are big fan of Melissa Odabash fashion?
