Sal Masekela

Sal Masekela is known for hosting the Daily Ten show on E! Entertainment Televion, along with Debbie Matenopoulos and Catt Sadler. Sal is also the owner of a production company called: Berkela Films, with movies like “Bra Boys” and “Switch”. In this interview Sal share with us some of his style secrets, his great sense of individuality, and his love for producing.

How would you describe your personal style?
I describe my personal style as sort of a hotch potch, part surfer part hip hop and part hipster.

What inspires your style?
My inspiration for my style comes across the board. A lot of it comes from my travels. Seeing how other people dress in other parts of the world is always really inspiring to me. You get to pick the best hats the best t-shirts and the best shoes. I’m also inspired by how I’m feeling over the course of a time period. In the summer time my whole style switches to “I wish I was at the beach”. I definitely don’t want to look too put together because then you like someone else did it for you and it’s not really you. There are a lot of people on television that are been told for so long what to wear and how they should look. They don’t really have a sense of self. Your sense of self reflect how you were you cloths. There are cloths that I won’t wear because I know me.

How do you go about picking an outfit for a red carpet event?
I have lots of friends who are designers and have their clothing lines. I try to support as many as these friends as I can. I just connect them with art. The last couple of years they really learned my style, what I will wear what I won’t wear. My friends do lots of different lines like Trovata, which is a line I’m really into right now. The girls at NLA T Shirts are really nice to me, Quiksilver, The Hundreds, and Lacoste. And for a red carpet I got to step it up a notch. When it comes to red carpet my first choice is usually Hugo Boss because I really like the way their suites fit me, and their cut. A lot of time when you get into the higher end they tend to dress for much narrower frames. It can get frustrating, because I can like an outfit a lot but it won’t necessarily fit me body type. I am a big fan of John Varvatos but I can only wear a handful of his cloths. Ben Sherman. And, I’m a big fan of Gucci shoes.

Did you ever have a fashion disaster?
The first weeks on “The Daily Ten’ were a ‘fashion disaster’. Because they didn’t really have an idea of what they are going to allow us to dress in. They knew they wanted us to dress less formal, but they didn’t realize that jeans and t-shirt would be ok. So I find myself wearing a lot of things that I would never wear. I remember this hideous wool light blue and brown sweater and I felt like I was the angry kid on the first day in school. That is as bad it has ever been for me. I always been adamant about what I wear to reflect who I really am, and this saves me from major fashion disasters. I don’t let people take chances on me.

Who are your favorite designers?
Marc Jacobs is incredible.

Where is your favorite place to shop?
I’m really easy when it comes to where I shop. I go the Trovata Store in Newport Beach and Fred Siegel. I go there because they sell Kiehl’s. It is pretty much all I put on my body. They also have great jeans, great designer T’s the kind I really like, deconstructed t-shirts that look just a bit worn and soft.

Who does your hair?
I have an amazing hair dresser by the name Andy Drew, he is my savior. He is a real artist in the way he does my hair.

What is your signature cologne?
Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male.

What would be your ultimate stylish car?
Audi R8 in black. It was featured in the movie: Iron Man.

What is your favorite stylish drink?
Grey Goose and soda with a splash of cranberry please!

Which celebrities do you find most stylish?
Commen the rapper and Brad Pitt.

The city I love the most…
It is a toss-up between Vancouver and New York. I have to go with Vancouver as my first choice, and New York is second.

What one or two things some people may not know about you?
Singing. I got it from my dad. I grew up playing music my whole life from the time I was a little kid. And it is really what I thought I was going to do: be a musician like my dad. At a certain point I realized that these were hard footsteps to follow, and my music became surfing and snowboarding, and skate boarding.

What projects are you working on at the moment?
I own a production company called Berkela Films. Right now I have a movie out in the theatres which is a documentary called Bra Boys. I have another feature film that we shot in Whistler Vancouver. The movie is based on a snowboarding story and it is called: Switch. It is scheduled to be released next year. I really love producing, I love taking advantage of all the things that I had the privilege to paid to learn over the course of my ten year television career, and actually apply that to ideas that I’m really passionate about. I will be on The Daily Ten and with ESPN’s Winter X Games till at least year 2010. And hopefully, you will see me in films, and television, and acting. That is really my goal. I did forget to mention that I’m acting in the upcoming movie: Switch.

Style Interviews would like to thank Sal Masekela so much for sharing with us some of his style secrets. You can watch Sal every weekday on E! Channel’s: The Daily 10. The shows official website can be found at www.eonline.com/on/shows/daily10

Joseph Domingo

Joseph Domingo is a San Francisco based Fashion Designer, specializing in custom-made clothing. He designs for men and women, including sportswear, contemporary clothing, evening wear, and wedding gowns. In this interview Joseph Domingo talks about what inspired him to become a Fashion Designer, the most memorable garment he designed so far, his passion for meeting great people and making them look beautiful, and his dreams for a Joseph Domingo empire.

When did your fascination with fashion design begin?
As a young boy I used to love watching beauty pageants like Miss Universe. I got inspired by the beautiful women and their cloths.

How would you describe the Joseph Domingo fashion line?
Modern, contemporary, yet classy. The Joseph Domingo line is classic, and doesn’t follow trends.

“Shakira wore my dress on the cover of Cosmopolitan February 2008 edition, which was published in Europe, Check Republic, Asia, turkey and Latin America.”

How do you go about deciding what garment to design?
Depends on the fabric and client. I designed clothes that are appropriate to the event my client is attending. It has to be the right style that fits the occasion and climate too.

Where do you draw the inspiration for the style and color of your designs?
Travel, museums, architecture…

Who do you see wearing Joseph Domingo fashions?
Confident and sexy individuals. It has to be sexy and not vulgar.

What would be one of your most memorable garments you’ve ever designed?
Shakira wore my dress on the cover of Cosmopolitan February 2008 edition, which was published in Europe, Check Republic, Asia, turkey and Latin America.

Can you tell us more about the Joseph Domingo collection for this season?
Vixen inspired, cat woman, Alexis Colby from Dynasty. Sexy lines but not vulgar. The clothes are a bit longer and form fitted.

Who are some of your favorite designers of all time?
I call them the ‘Three Italians’: Giorgio Armani, Gianfranco Ferre, and Valentino. I love Giorgio Armani’s clothes because they are classic and well constructed. Gianfranco Ferre’s beautiful clothes are inspired by his studies in Architecture, and Valentino for his fluid and feminine clothes.

Where can we shop for Joseph Domingo fashions?
At my studio in San Francisco.

What do you love most about being a fashion designer?
Meeting great people and making them look beautiful.

How would you describe your own style?
Simple and elegant.

What’s next for Joseph Domingo?
Alot. I don’t want to stop. I would like to have my own empire someday. I can envision my own perfume line, and sunglasses. And I rather build my empire step by step, little by little instead of all at once.

You can learn more about Joseph and his line at his official website: www.josephdomingo.com

Arona Martin

Meet Arona Martin an Event Director at D3 Events who has worked with a ton of different clients and a variety of events, such as: HBO, Playboy, KODAK, Michael Jordon, the Clintons, etc. In this interview Arona Martin gives us her definition for “Party With Style”, tips on how to plan the ultimate 4th of July party, and her dream for a male-oriented baby shower honoring Matthew McConaughey’s baby.

How did you end up in a career as an event planner?
I think it started when I was a little girl and would invite everybody on my street over for a weekly tea party. I would hand write the invitations and require a strict dress code…everyone had to wear my grandmother’s costume jewelry and a boa (yes, even the boys). On one occasion, I even did a Magilla Gorilla theme and served bananas. As a teen, I’d host regular themed dinners (i.e. if we ordered Chinese food, I’d wear a kimono and chop sticks holding my hair up…)

What is your role at D3 Events and who are some of its clients?
I am the Event Director, and have worked with a ton of different clients on a variety of events. HBO, Playboy, KODAK, Michael Jordon, the Clintons, etc.

What is your definition of the phrase: “Party With Style”?
Making even the most lavish gala seem effortless…that, and still looking good after nine hours in stiletto heels!

What is the difference between planning an event for a celebrity, a corporation, or a politician?
My goal for every party is to make the client or company feel like they have celebrity status. I like to think I am changing people’s lives one party at a time. Who doesn’t want to feel like a rock star for a night?

What are some of the most memorable events you have organized so far?
I think it has to be my partner, Joey Vartanian’s surprise birthday party. It was a “Royal” theme, and aside from having horse and carriages on hand to take guests home, we had a 30 person Gospel choir sing “Hail to the KING” at midnight while knights brought in a 4 foot cake in the shape of a crown. Getting recognition for a job well done is great, but seeing him have great time was incredibly rewarding.

“My dream party to plan would be a male-oriented baby shower honoring Matthew McConaughey’s baby. From a cigar rolling station, to "how to properly wear the baby bjorn and still play Wii", to "hold the remote and the baby bottle at the same time," there is so much I could do!”

What would be your dream party to plan?
A male-oriented baby shower honoring Matthew McConaughey’s baby. From a cigar rolling station, to “how to properly wear the baby bjorn and still play Wii”, to “hold the remote and the baby bottle at the same time,” there is so much I could do!

How do you stay calm when things don’t go as they are planned?
I over plan for most of my events, so the night of I can concentrate on the client(s). I also truly love every event I create, so I try to act as a guest as well as the planner. There are issues that do come up occasionally, but that is why I have surrounded myself with an incredible staff that can handle everything. A few years back, I was preparing for a corporate party for 800, and 30 minutes before the doors opened there was a car crash right outside the venue that took out the electricity on the whole block. 5 minutes before the doors opened, we had 500 candles lighting the space….we quickly transformed the venue into an intimate cocktail party as guests arrived…an hour into the party the electricity came back and the transition was amazing, the client thought we planned it that way!

Is it difficult for you to enjoy an event someone else planned?
Not at all, I have a great time wherever I go – but sometimes it’s difficult to impress me.

What does it take to succeed as an event planner?
Most people would say organization- which is something that definitely helps- but I think the two key characteristics are: creativity and the ability to take risks.

What tips can you give us for planning the ultimate 4th of July party, or any theme party at home?
Here are some great twists to spice up this year’s 4th of July backyard BBQ party:

Acai Organic Cocktail!: Açai (ah-sci-ee) is a rainforest berry – a small, dark purple fruit that grows on palm trees on the floodplains of the Amazon basin. Recent scientific study has earned it the enviable title of “world’s healthiest fruit” in part, because it is likely to be the world’s highest antioxidant fruit. Use this organic juice to create a tasty cocktail and also be good to your body! Acai is replacing the pomegranate as the trendy cocktail mixer!
1 oz Bacardi Razz
1/2 oz Bacardi Grand Melon
1 oz acai juice
splash of lime juice
1 oz club soda
Shake and serve over ice with a wedge of lime!

SnoCone Machine (The adult version!)
Great for an outdoor party or any event where the weather is warm! The machine runs around $25 at any Target or Wal-Mart and the syrups come in all sorts of colors; why not do red white and blue sno cones?! Kids will love them, and you can add flavored vodka for the adults! Be a kid again with a kick!

The Updated Burger Bar:
In addition to putting out all sorts of fun toppings from shredded cheese, grilled onions, to potato chips, have 10 different sauces to choose from. What about ALSO all different burgers themselves? Like Kobe beef, Salmon burger, crab cake burger, turkey, etc. That could be cute? People will love to create all sorts of combinations, and with the guests helping themselves, it gives you time to enjoy the fireworks!

Style
Anyone and everyone has thrown a "white party"…why not incorporate our nations red white and blue theme into the night and have guests become a part of the decor by wearing all blue, you can then add the red and white into everything else (like decorations), and la-ta! Your patriotic party is a hit!

Swag Bags
Who doesn’t love a swag bag? Why not bring a little “Hollywood” to the outdoor BBQ and prepare gift bags for the guests. A “summer survival kit” is a fun touch (use the small grocery store recyclable ones they sell for $1) fill with suntan lotion in SPF 30 or more, mini bug spray, and a water bottle (again incorporating the eco-idea and cutting down on plastic waste). Guests will love it, and wont get bitten or burned!

What do you love most about your job?
Making every guest feel like they had the best night of their life!

How would you describe your own style?
I try to keep it casual with an edge, so it’s usually jeans with rocker heels ( I LOVE Beverly Feldman!) and some fun earrings. When I am working, it is all black. I don’t have a ton of time to go from drab to glam on an event night, so half of my closet is full of black “party” clothes. That, paired with over the top rhinestone earrings, and I’m ready for a red carpet entrance any night of the week.
